What to Do When a Registered Brain Donor Passes Away
Brain and spinal cord tissues deteriorate very rapidly, so we aim to collect tissue optimally within 24 hours after death.
We also accept donated tissue up to 48 hours after death, but if there is a prolonged delay between death and brain retrieval of over 48 hours, the tissues would no longer suitable for research.
Since it is vital that we are contacted as soon as possible after death, pledged donors should ensure that their next-of-kin or legal representatives are aware of their wish to donate their brain. The brain retrieval process that we follow is described below:
-
Notification of Death
Next-of-kin should contact Brain Bank on the 24-hour emergency number as soon as possible.
-
Transportation of Body
Brain Bank's engaged Casket Company will transport the donor's body from place of death to site of tissue retrieval.
-
Tissue Retrieval
Tissue retrieval occurs at SGH Academia. An incision is made at the back of the head, and the procedure typically takes about 3 hours.
-
Return of Body
Once brain retrieval is complete, Brain Bank Coordinator will ensure the body is returned to the family for the funeral arrangements.
