What the Brain Bank Singapore does

At the Brain Bank Singapore, we take informed consent for brain donation from healthy individuals as well as those with neurological disorders. This is done via a prospective donor scheme, whereby individuals register as a brain donor while alive to donate their brain tissues for scientific research after death.
The HBRA legislation allows us to take consent from those who are mentally capable of making their own decisions or from the next-of-kin of those who no longer have that capacity. We advise people who are interested in donating their brain and other tissues, such as the spinal cord, to discuss their wishes with their next-of-kin. After the consent procedure has been fully explained to the donor and they wish to proceed, a donor card with a 24/7 emergency call number will then be issued to them.
Brain Bank Singapore strives to ensure a smooth process from transportation to brain retrieval for the relatives of our donors upon the death of their loved one. Join us in raising awareness about brain donation and ensuring that every brain retrieval is conducted in a timely manner.

Facilitate the process for your patients

  • Contact Brain Bank Singapore if your patients have expressed an interest in brain donation. Brain Bank Singapore personnel will then provide more details and conduct the consent-taking process with your patient.
  • Upon the death of a registered donor, it is crucial to inform us immediately on our 24-hour emergency number.
  • Medical Certificates of death need to be issued by physicians as soon as possible for us to arrange for transport and brain retrieval without delay, preferably within 24 hours.
